How to Transfer a Domain You Bought Elsewhere to Wix

Updated: Aug 3

If you purchased your domain from another provider (like GoDaddy, Google Domains, or Namecheap) and want to fully manage it through Wix, you can transfer the domain directly to your Wix account. This means Wix becomes your new domain host, and you’ll be able to manage all domain settings—billing, DNS records, and renewals—right from your Wix dashboard.

Below you'll find a video walk through guiding you through transerring your domain you bought elsewhere to Wix.

How to Transfer Your Domain to Wix

To move your domain from another provider to Wix, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Domains section in your Wix account.

  2. Click Add an Existing Domain and select Transfer your domain to Wix.

  3. Review the information shown, then click Start Transfer.

  4. Enter the domain name you want to transfer (e.g., mystunningwebsite.com).

  5. Use the dropdown menu to select your current domain host (e.g., GoDaddy, Google Domains).

  6. Click Continue.

Prepare Your Domain for Transfer

  1. Log in to your domain provider’s account:

    • Open a new browser tab and sign in to the account where you originally purchased your domain.

    • In Wix, check the I logged in box once you're signed in.

  2. Unlock your domain with your current registrar:

    • In your provider’s dashboard, disable any transfer lock or domain protection.

    • Then, in Wix, check the I unlocked it box.

  3. Get your authorization (EPP) code from your current host.

    • Paste this code into the Enter authorization code field in Wix.

    • Click Continue.

Complete the Transfer

  1. Choose a registration extension period (minimum of one year).

💡 If you have a free domain voucher, Wix will apply it automatically.

  2. Click Continue.

  3. Review and update your contact information, if needed. Then, click Continue.

  4. Select your domain privacy preference:

    • Private Registration: Keeps your contact details hidden from the public WHOIS directory. You can toggle this on or off anytime.

    • Public Registration: Your name and contact info remain visible in WHOIS. You can only switch to private during a manual renewal.

  5. Click Continue.

  6. Choose your payment method and click Submit Purchase.

What Happens After the Transfer?

  • Wix becomes your domain host.

  • You’ll manage all settings—renewal, DNS, email setup—inside Wix.

  • Your site remains live during the process (no downtime).

Tip: If you only want to connect your domain to Wix without moving it from your current registrar, you can use name servers or pointing instead.

FAQs

Click a question below to learn more about managing your domain with Wix and how Webryact can support you.

Do I need to unlock my domain before transferring it?

Yes. To move your domain to Wix, it must be unlocked in your current domain provider's account. Domains are often locked by default to prevent unauthorized transfers, so make sure to disable that setting before starting the process.

What is an authorization code and how do I get it?

The authorization code (also called an EPP code) is a unique code your current registrar provides to confirm you're allowed to transfer the domain. You can usually find it in your provider’s domain management section, or by contacting their support team.

Can I use my domain with Wix without transferring it?

Absolutely. If you’d rather keep your domain hosted elsewhere but still use it for your Wix site, you can connect it in two ways:

  • Pointing: Update the A and CNAME records.

  • Name Servers: Replace your existing name servers with Wix’s.

How long does a domain transfer take?

Transfers typically take up to 7 days, depending on your current registrar’s policies. Once it’s approved, you’ll get a confirmation from Wix.

Can I transfer a domain I just bought?

You’ll need to wait at least 60 days after registering or transferring a domain before you can transfer it again. This is a standard rule set by ICANN (the global domain authority).

What happens to my email when I transfer a domain to Wix?

If you have an email service connected to your domain (like Google Workspace), you’ll need to reconfigure your DNS settings in Wix after the transfer to keep your email working.
